“Tarde En La Noche”

Today’s release from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra features a bilingual re-take of a Paul Simon classic. “Late in the Evening/Tarde En La Noche” is a gem, a dreamy, swingy, Salsa remake of a great track. Simon sings the first verse in a dreamy falsetto, slipping into his tenor for the remainder of the song, evoking both the gorgeous, Latin-infused Doo-Wop he and Orchestra director Oscar Hernandez developed for The Capeman and the storytelling structure of “That’s Me,” from Surprise.

Some lyric changes, for the obsessive types:

  • “When I come back to the room, everybody just seemed to move and I turned my amp up loud and began to play” becomes “…. When I come back to the room, everybody just seemed to move and I felt like I was riding on a star”
  • “First thing I remember when you came into my life, I said I’m gonna get that girl no matter what I do” becomes “First thing I remember when she came into my life, I said I’m gonna get my girl she’s all my heart beats for”

United We Swing is in stores and on iTunes, where you can pick up the album or the track for a buck.
