Amos Lee Added to American Tunes Show

Subject says it all. Amos joins previously announced performers Olu Dara, Gillian Welch, the Roches, Josh Groban and Grizzly Bear for the last set of Love In Hard Times shows at BAM. Oh, and some guy named Paul Simon will be hanging out on stage as well. Looks like there may even be a few tickets available. More info at the BAM site here. I still contend that the final suite of shows will be the most interesting of the three, though it will have to be pretty special to top the joyfulness of Under African Skies.

The concert was great, albeit slightly odd. It would have been nice/helpful if each artist introduced the next - if there was some welcoming to the audience. Otherwise there was awkward silences in between acts, with people begging for Paul to come out.
The show should maybe have been called a “tribute” to Paul or Paul and friends.

A final number with everyone?

Amos Lee was fantastic as were the Roches and Gillian Welch.

As for Josh Groban - I can not make sense of why he was there, his renditions made my whole row cringe. It is hard to comprehend how Paul Simon actually enjoys him. It is not nice to insult of course, but really? He is mediocre saccharin at best!

Per Flanders: “As for Josh Groban - I can not make sense of why he was there, his renditions made my whole row cringe. It is hard to comprehend how Paul Simon actually enjoys him. It is not nice to insult of course, but really? He is mediocre saccharin at best!”

Maybe this will help answer your question:

Groban was drawn to musical theater and opera, counting Mandy Patinkin (1952–) and Luciano Pavarotti (1935–) as two of his idols. At the same time, he listened to pop musicians. In Interview, Groban explained to Renee Fleming that he was especially interested in artists “who decided not to settle into one particular musical style—people like Paul Simon, who took folk music and put African music on top of it.” He was referring to American singer-songwriter Paul Simon (1941–) and his award-winning Graceland album, which was the first CD Groban ever received as a gift.

Josh Groban has played Simon’s “America” on previous tours. Your whole row cringed? Really? Funny, because I think the week’s “sold out” status is because JOSH GROBAN is there!!! “Mediocre saccharin at best?” Some people just don’t get it. Glad I do.

Oh, and I’ll be there Sunday night for the finale. But I won’t be cringing…..lol….!
